I've experienced some growth in the short time we've had on externship. I've developed a lot of fine technical skills and attention to little details in the engineering process over this past week. For instance, when running on the lathe something as minute as hand placement can affect your cut or facing job. Additionally I learned the importance of controlling the pace of which you face a part (smoothing the edge of a part) otherwise you may end up with an uneven surface.
The way I learned these details is through my mentor Floyd, he taught me their importance and gave feedback on my technique as I worked. This kind of experience is invaluable and I'm glad I have the chance to learn it now as opposed to later on in my career.
